service – to school | to college | to profession | past service / other accomplishments | to humanity
My growing up years were spent studying in Tashi Namgyal Academy, a school in the Himalayan town of Gangtok. The motto of the school was “Learn to serve”. I believe
it is in one’s selfish interest to be selfless.
A service obligation is built into the life of an academic, which includes service to the school, the college and the profession. I’ve held leadership positions in Special Interest Groups (SIGs) of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) and, as of January 2013, am a member of the ASIS&T board in my capacity as the Deputy Director of the Chapter Assembly. I was awarded the ASIS&T James M. Cretsos Leadership Award for 2012. From 2007-2009, I served as the Chair of the Association of Pacific-Rim Universities (APRU) Doctoral Students’ Network (DSN).
