    This year SCoSAA is hosting some informal coffee hours for archives students. Join us at Java City for our first coffee hour of the year! This is a chance for archives students in all stages of the program to meet each other. (Although the coffee hour is from 5:00-6:00 please feel free to show up when you are able and stay as long as you want.) This coffee hour doesnt have a theme; however, you should feel free to bring any questions, comments, or concerns that you have about the start of the semester, classes, or the program.     SCoSAA Coffee Hour: SAA
    Join us at Java City for our afternoon coffee hour. (Although the coffee hour is from 12:30 to 1:30, please feel free to show up when you are able and stay as long as you want.) One of the topics for this weeks coffee hour is SAA. Please come and share your experiences from the SAA annual meeting in Chicago. If you werent able to attend SAA, this is a great opportunity to hear about the sessions and what your colleagues learned. As always, the discussion is also open to any questions, and you are welcome to share the exciting plans that are on your horizon for the semester.   • SCoSAA Meeting
    Meet the new officers and the archives professors, and hear more about how SCoSAA can help enhance your archives studies.
  • Tour of Congregational Library
    Join SCoSAA on a tour of the Congregational Library in Beacon Hill in Boston. Formed in 1853 with the gift of 56 books from its owners’ personal collections, the Congregational Library now holds 225,000 items documenting the history of one of the nation’s oldest and most influential religious traditions.
  • Archivist Panel Discussion – “What Archivists Need to Know to Stay Relevant.”
    Come listen to a group of working archivists from the JFK Library, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Police Department, and more and hear about what skills and experience they think students should have as they enter the workforce and what they have experienced in the industry.
  • Open Access Week – Archives Tech Lab Seminar
    Open Access is a way to allow the greater public to gain access to knowledge creation with less barriers. Traditionally, the Open Access movement and archives intersected with relation to scholarly publications. This workshop will look at how the Open Access movement affects the desire by archives to provide greater access to archival materials.
  • Looking Inward/Looking Outward: Changing Roles and Expectations in Archival Settings
    Keynote address: Digital Natives in the Archives, by Richard Sweeney, University Librarian, New Jersey Institute of Technology. Workshops on identifying and caring for audiovisual materials, Archivists Toolkit, and advanced reference and access. Panel discussions include email archiving, born‑digital collections, digitizing and marketing images, managing volunteers, donor relations, and unconventional collections.

Spring 2010

  • LIS 438/440 Internship Discussion
    Are you taking LIS 438 or 440 this semester? Have you taken those classes in the past? We want you to talk! We will be hosting an informal chat on for students to talk to others about internships.
  • Job and Career Panel
    Concerned about finding a job after you graduate? Or even while still in school? You’re not alone!
    Join us to hear local archivists talk about what they look for in potential employees, tips to make your resume look smarter, and other tricks of the trade. The panelists are:

  • SCoSAA/NEA 2nd Annual Job Shadowing Program!
    An opportunity for students to visit a repository for a half or full day and experience a day in the life of an archivist or records manager.
  • Ethics in the Archive Panel
    We will all face ethical issues at some point in our career, and this panel will help us address what problems we will see like privacy, the SAA Code of Ethics, donors, copyright, whistle-blowing, and appraisal ethics and how to address them.
  • Tour of the Harvard Depository
    The Harvard Depository is Harvard’s climate-controlled archival media facility that houses a great deal of the paper material as well as films, microforms, and magnetic tapes from it’s libraries, archives, and museums. It is an immense and technologically-advanced facility with room to expand to offer 200,000 feet of storage space. Tours are not offered frequently as the facility is incredibly busy so this is an amazing opportunity.

Fall 2009

  • An Evening with Dr. Saad Eskander, Director of Iraq’s National Library
    SCoSAA, SIR, and the Warburg Lecture Series presents An Evening with Dr. Saad Eskander, Director of Iraq’s National Library. Light refreshments to follow.
  • Disaster in the Stacks! Disaster Prevention and Awareness in Libraries and Archives
    Location: Faculty and Staff Dining room in the Fens in the Main College Building (across from Bookstore)

  • Archives Job Shadow Program
    NEA (New England Archivists) and SCoSAA teamed up for the first Archives Job Shadow Program. This program presented opportunities for students to visit a repository for a half or full day and experience a “day in the life” of an archivist or records manager. (more information)
  • An Evening with Mark Greene
    Former SAA president Mark Greene talked with SCoSAA via Skype on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Mark specializes in acquisition, appraisal, and deaccesioning, and is the Director of the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming. (more information)
  • WGBH Tour
    SCoSAA arranged for a tour of the new WGBH studios, music library, and archives.
  • Mount Auburn Cemetary Tour and Discussion
    SCoSAA arranged with Mount Auburn Cemetery’s archivist, Brian Sullivan, for a tour of the grounds and discussion ofArchives in the Landscape: Piecing Together the Stories Behind the Stones. (more information)
  • Housing Memory Graduate Student Conference
    SCoSAA members Margaret Peachy and Katherine Dunn were selected to present their papers at the Housing Memory Graduate Student Conference at the University of Toronto March 13-14, 2009. Their papers have now been published in theFaculty of Information Quaterly. View the papers in the theFaculty of Information Quaterly(2009, Volume 1, No. 3).

Fall 2008

    SCoSAA arranged a career panel October 28th with experts from Massachusetts who discussed their experiences in the archives job market, expectations for new graduates in the profession, and advice on resumes and interviews. See thenews itemabout the event and the panelists.
  • The Boston Athenaeum Tour
    SCoSAA scheduled a tour of theThe Boston Athenaeumon Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008. The Athenaeum is located at 10 1/2 Beacon St., close to the Statehouse. The Boston Athenaeum is an exclusive private library and art gallery, in operation since 1807. Their collections are administered by a five-member curatori.
