Monday, April 11th:

    Come learn about UX at an archive! UXPA, SCoSAA, and AMIA are excited to welcome guests from the WGBH Media Library and Archives, who will demo their Open Vault site, which provides online access to unique and historically important content produced by WGBH. The event will begin with a description of the newest version of Open Vault, and then the discussion will open up for feedback on the usability and user experience of the interface. We will welcome five members of the WGBH team, including Casey Davis, Project Manager; Michael Muraszko, Digital Archives Manager; Karen Cariani, Senior Director; Chuck McCallum, Developer; and Andrew Myers, Supervising Developer. Thursday, April 14th:

    *Beta Phi Mu – Guest Speaker Chris Bourg

    Beta Beta Chapter, Beta Phi Mu, the international LIS honor society, invites you to a talk by guest speaker Chris Bourg, PhD. Chris is the Director of Libraries at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she also has oversight of the MIT Press. Prior to assuming her role at MIT, Chris was Associate University Librarian for Public Services at Stanford University. Chris has a PhD in Sociology from Stanford University, and spent 3 years on the faculty at the United States Military Academy at West Point. She is keenly interested in issues of diversity and inclusion in higher education; and in the roles libraries play in advancing social justice and democracy.

Friday, April 15th:

    *Simmons Metadata Inquiries Lab Datathon

    Join SMIL for its inaugural event: a team competition that will test your metadata mettle and your ability to adapt standards on the fly. Kate Bowers, Collections Services Archivist for Metadata, Systems, and Standards at Harvard University, will kick off the event as keynote speaker.     *ASIS&T – Apocolibrary Laser Tag
    8:00pm – 10:00pm – Beatley Library
    Simmons ASIS&T will host an evening of laser tag… in the stacks of Beatley Library! In a nutshell, library laser tag will include four rounds of 30 minutes each, with two teams of 4-6 fighting to solve the puzzle and stay alive! SLIS and CS students are welcome to participate. Library laser tag will not include strobe lights or smoke machines, so that way, more people can participate. Light snacks will also be provided, and we will do our best to provide options that accommodate most diets and food allergies. All participants will also get a small prize.

    *PLG Anti-Racism Training
    1:00pm – 6:30pm – Lefavour Hall, Kotzen Room
    Come to Community Change Inc. at SLIS: Anti-Racism Training for Information Professionals! Paul Marcus of Community Change Inc., an anti-racism group in Boston, will be leading participants through a training to discuss systemic racism, white privilege, and white supremacy. What is it, how does it show up in LIS, and how can we counteract it? All these questions will be explored and more. We will be serving coffee, tea, and snacks. Celebrate the end of spring semester with a #FlashbackFriday to high school’s biggest moment, SLIS-style! Wear whatever makes you feel fancy (but bonus points for throwback attire) and kick up your heels with a live DJ, rocking dance floor, light refreshments, and cash-only bar.
