    Please join the Student Chapter of the ALA International Relations Round Table for a panel about LIS careers abroad! This is a rare opportunity to hear from speakers who have worked in the UK and Egypt, and will tell us about what it takes to become a librarian or archivist outside of your home countries. Wednesday, March 30th:

    Join the archives faculty and SCoSAA to learn more about attending conferences, ask the faculty about their research, and check in about any other questions about archives or the department. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

    *Public Lecture Series – Amy Ryan: Civic Engagement: The Opportunity, Purpose, and Impact
    4:00pm – 5:00pm – Palace Road 207
    Working with the community is essential to successful public librarianship. Harnessing the power of the people constructively while avoiding backlash and naysayers is always a challenge. Civic engagement encompasses a range of connections including teen advisory groups, board committees, neighborhood councils and other groups. This presentation will offer an overview of this dimension of library service based on observations and experiences, both positive and not so positive. Please RSVP.

    *ASIS&T – Coders Without Borders
    5:00pm – 7:00pm – Collaboratory (P-314)
    Coders Without Borders is an excellent opportunity for CS and LIS students to work on non-school related projects in the company of SLIS Tech Lab staff and other students. Come join this supportive community and work on a specific project or hone your coding skills! Snacks will be provided. Coders Without Borders will take place every other week. Come for a little bit or come for the whole time!

Thursday, March 31st:

    *SLA – InterviewX (with Boston Toastmakers)
    4:30pm – 6:00pm – Main College Building C101
    Looking to improve your public speaking skills? Ally Dunn and Brett Burdick of Boston Toastmasters will be presenting tips and tricks for improving your speaking and leadership skills. InterviewX is a great event to attend prior to SLA’s upcoming ResumeX and the SLIS Career Fair.

Friday, April 1st:

    *LISSA/ASIS&T – Video Games and Chill
    4:00pm – 6:00pm – SLIS Tech Lab (P-213)
    Take a study break with LISSA and ASIS&T and enjoy some of your favorite throwback video games as well as a selection of off-the-beaten-path indie games that represent diverse themes and creators. Snacks will be served!

    The 82nd International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) General Conference and Assembly (http://2016.ifla.org/) will be held in the U.S. this year from August 13 to 19, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio! In an effort to encourage students to attend, the Simmons Student Chapter of the ALA International Relations Round Table (SCIRRT) will be offering a scholarship to cover the $282 conference registration fees for one Simmons SLIS student.

    ResumeX is a speed-dating style career development workshop in which LIS professionals review current graduate students’ resumes and cover letters, providing constructive feedback. Please bring copies or your resume, cover letter, and business cards. Dinner and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Although SLA is sponsoring ResumeX, the event is open to students interested in working in all types of libraries!
