National Library Week!
Libraries=Strong Communities: Celebrate National Library Week, April 7-14, 2019
This year, the American Library Association has focused National Library Week on the theme Libraries = Strong Communities, emphasizing the valuable resources that libraries provide to cities, towns, schools, and campuses, and how they bond members of those communities. Read more about NLW and what you can do to help spread appreciation for our libraries. Election Update: Did you forget to submit your name for an officer position next year? Were you on the fence about getting involved? Good news – The nomination period has been extended an additional week! The form will now close at noon on Saturday, April 13. Voting will take place Sunday, April 14-Saturday, April 20. 
 
Boston International Film Festival: Want to see movies that make you think about very real issues? Want to take a study break and see a international film right in Boston? You’re in luck! SCIRRT will be providing tickets for two movies at the Boston International Film Festival. If you want to see the Tanzanian movie In The Name of Your Daughter (April 11) or the Japanese film Suitable for You (April 14), fill out this survey.

White Fragility Discussion – II

Continuing the student-led discussion on Robin DiAngelo’s book, White Fragility: Why it’s so hard for white people to talk about racism, on the theme of which DiAngelo presented at this year’s ALA Midwinter conference – where several LIS professionals of color reported experiencing racist remarks and actions from white colleagues. Join us to be a part of this sorely needed conversation in our profession – if you don’t have time to read the book read the article by the same name instead. Boston Public Health Commission will be offering education and training to SLIS students. Participants learn about the importance of calling 9-1-1 in the event of an overdose, how to perform rescue breathing and administer nasal NARCAN, and treatment options for opioid users.

The Allen Smith Visiting Scholars Program selects an annual scholar-in-residence. Past scholars have spent their time at Simmons teaching, guest lecturing, holding workshops or symposia. The 2019 Allen Smith Symposium, “From Community to Curriculum: Translating Social Responsibility into Archival Education,” will gather SLIS faculty and area professionals to engage in discussion.
