Spring Forum Questions
LISSA will be having a Spring forum on March 22nd, beginning at 5:00pm. We are now accepting question submissions. Please submit your questions here.
Friday, February 24th:
Join PLG in Beatley Library to discuss Radical Cataloging with Beatley cataloger, Andrew Clark. Andrew created a unique cataloging technique to address the needs of Beatley’s growing Zine collection. Hear a short presentation, ask questions, then join us for a zine making workshop, focusing on folding and binding techniques.
Join SLA@Simmons for a library tour of the Tufts Hirsch Health Sciences Library followed by a tour of the Boston Athenaeum! We’ll hear from Library staff about what they do and how they do it and get a peek at their impressive facilities. Goodie bags and fun will be provided, so don’t miss out!
We will meet at the Palace Road Building at 10:30am on Saturday, February 25th and proceed to the tours. We should end at or before 2:00pm.
The tour is free, but all participants are responsible for their own

Thursday, March 2nd:
Join LISSA and your fellow SLIS students for pizza and an informal discussion to prepare for the upcoming SLIS Spring Forum (March 22nd). We’ll be collecting questions on all topics to ask faculty at the Spring Forum and discussing specific policy proposals that affect SLIS students and recent grads.
Saturday, March 4th:
The Diversity, Equity, Race, Accessibility, and Identity in LIS (DERAIL) Forum upholds the essential role of combating white supremacy and oppressive power structures in LIS institutions and pedagogy. We seek to create a productive and mindful space to explore the impacts of social justice frameworks in guiding our work as students and practitioners.
We recognize that our LIS institutions, including our graduate programs, are embedded within racist, ableist and heteropatriarchal power structures and perpetuate these same inequalities. We also recognize that this is not inevitable and that we must amplify our own voices to be heard by administrations and institutions that uncritically support the privileging of white supremacist perspectives in information environments, including but not limited to archives, libraries and museums. We acknowledge that we have vested power as practitioners in upholding or challenging oppressive power structures in our interactions with the public and within our institutions.
DERAIL stands in solidarity with students in higher education across the country who are organizing to combat oppressive curriculum and treatment. We believe in the radical potential of library and information science to facilitate meaningful discussions of the interlocking roles of race, sexuality, ability, gender and class in the maintenance of oppressive conditions in LIS. Join ALA-SC for an after-party on the first day of the DERAIL Forum! We’ll be at the Landsdowne Pub — we have reserved our own bar (we’ll be in the function room behind the main stage). ALA-SC will provide the food and space, drinks will be available for individual purchase. Hope you can join us!
Sunday, March 5th:
UnConferences are innovative, safe spaces where community can gather to share ideas and discuss pressing issues or concerns that are on the minds of participants in the moment of the event. Sessions are decided by participants upon at the start of the day’s event. Any participant can propose a session – do you want to lead a discussion group, get input on a new project, a reflection session, or something else all together? Remember – its all about you!
