*AMIA-SC – Revolutionary Cinema in Latin America: A Conversation with Janet Ceja
    4:30 pm – 5:30 pm – The Collaboratory, P-314
Ceja will present current research on revolutionary cinema in Latin America, with a discussion and viewing of two short films by Santiago Álvarez, Cuban filmmaker known for producing revolutionary cinema, a film style developed as result of the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Álvarez held a conviction that the primary purpose of such cinema was to be screened to the public and have people wrestle critically with the content. Thus, the preservation of this material was to be achieved in the consciousness of the people, while the preservation of the film material was secondary to its social function. We will screen two of his documentary short films Now! (1965) and79 Primaveras (1969), and discuss their historical context and contemporary significance. Note: films contain graphic footage. Snacks will be provided! If you are unable to attend, but would like to be kept in the loop about future events, please sign up for our listerv by emailing [email protected]
