Handshake Workshop

In preparation for the SLIS Career and Networking Fair in April, join us for a Handshake workshop! What is Handshake? It’s an online database of employers and jobs that all Simmons students and alumni have access to. Representatives from the Career Education Center will show you how to set up your account, search for jobs, and get the most out of Handshake. We hope to see you there!
Decolonizing the Caribbean Record: A Conversation with Dr. Jeanette Bastian

Join SCIRRT for a conversation with SLIS professor Dr. Jeanette Bastian about her new book, Decolonizing the Caribbean Record: An Archives Reader. We will hear from her about this new collection of “forty essays by archivists and academics within and outside of the Caribbean region that address challenges of collecting, representing, and preserving the records and cultural expressions of former colonial societies, exploring the contribution of these records to nation-building.”

White Fragility Book Discussion

A student-led discussion on Robin DiAngelo’s book, White Fragility: Why it’s so hard for white people to talk about racism, on the theme of which DiAngelo presented at this year’s ALA Midwinter conference – where several LIS professionals of color reported experiencing racist remarks and actions from white colleagues. To be a part of this sorely needed conversation in our profession, pick up a free copy of the book from the SSC window, or if you don’t have time to read the book read the article by the same name instead. There will be snacks!

Webinar: SustainRT Virtual Conversation with LIS Students

The Sustainability Round Table is ~500 student members strong and we want to talk to you! Our virtual conversation will bring you up-to-date with recent activities as well as the (very exciting) unveiling of our SustainRT Mentorship Program. Seasoned sustainability librarians will be paired with LIS students aiming to weave meaningful change-making re: sustainability into their careers. While the actual program won’t go live right away, we’ll be asking for your feedback for shaping the program. You’ll also get to meet some of our mentors!

Volunteering at The History Project with PLG

The Progressive Librarians Guild is continuing its partnership with The History Project, and we would love for you to join us! This is a volunteer opportunity that allows us to process materials for Boston’s LGBTQ Archive. The archive is entirely volunteer run, and through PLG we are able to contribute to their work. This is great experience for all students, regardless of your archives experience. We will meet in the SLIS lounge at 11:15 to caravan together, or you can meet us there!
 
AMIA’s Film Handling and Identification Workshop

This basic film handling experience will introduce you to the wonderful world of moving image archiving! Drop in and hang out with us, learn how to handle various film types, and have an all around good time. Plus, pizza!

Conference Preparation Forum

Hear from a panel of SLIS students as they share their experiences at various LIS-related professional conferences. The conversation will cover such topics as how to obtain funding, networking strategies, giving presentations, and making the most out of your conference experience. If you cannot attend, LISSA will distribute resources to summarize what was covered, including a list of upcoming conferences for 2019-2020.

Spring 2019 SLIS Career Fair

The 2019 Library and Information Science Career and Networking Fair will bring together employers who are seeking interns, employees, and networking opportunities with students, these employers are from the Greater Boston area, New England, and beyond. Co-hosted by SLIS and the Simmons Career Education Center (CEC), the fair is a terrific opportunity for recruiters to promote their organizations and meet highly qualified candidates seeking full-time, part-time, and internship employment as well as networking opportunities.
