Brought to you by the SLIS Tech Lab 4pm-5pm, SLIS Tech Lab
  • In this workshop we will cover the basics of the statistical and graphic computing environment that is R (it’s not as scary as it sounds I promise) as well as some intermediate applications. We will cover a brief history of R, how R can be used by LIS professionals and the LIS community, basic visualization tools and techniques, tools and resources for teaching yourself R, and additional packages that you may find useful. Feel free to bring your own computer, however if you are planning on doing this know that you will need to download both R and R studio on your laptop (these are both applications that are available on the P213 Tech Lab computers).

Brought to you by SLIS Tech Lab 4pm-5pm, SLIS Tech Lab
  • Come learn what cameras, microphones, and other fun toys are available from the Tech Lab and Media Lab in this demo of A/V technology that you can borrow and use! Recording devices for events, projects, and interviews, as well as video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, will be on display in this hands-on workshop designed to help students get familiar with A/V technology available from the Labs.

Hackathon 101

Brought to you by SLIS Tech Lab 5pm-6pm, SLIS Tech Lab
  • Simmons College is putting on a Hackathon (Shark Hacks) on Saturday March 24th through Sunday 25th! Hackathons are some of the best places for students interested in Computer Science and coding to meet people and explore opportunities in the field. Although Hackathons can have an intimidating reputation, it doesn’t have to be that way! Come to our Hackathon 101 Workshop, and find out everything you need to know to attend your first hackathon!

Thursday, March 22:

Open Zine Workshop

Brought to you by Beatley Library and LISSA (Library and Information Science Student Association) 1pm-3pm, Beatley Library
  • Enjoy a study break by making and reading Zines with fellow Simmons Students in the library!

Track Ch-Ch-Changes: Mastering the “Review” function in Word

Brought to you by SLIS Tech Lab 2pm-3pm, SLIS Tech Lab
  • Whether you are working as a copyeditor or just trying to give your classmates’ feedback on a group project, you will probably need to use the “Review” function in Microsoft Word at some point in your career. Rather like a red pen on printed paper, Review allows you to add margin notes and marked line edits on Word documents. In this workshop, we will go over these basic functions as well as some of the more advanced customizable features of “Review” in Word.
