SLIS Student associations and Beatley Library have come together to plan a week of activities in celebration of free and open access to information.

Get caught reading a banned or challenged book! Grab some props, a banned book and strike a pose! Post to social media to share with our community members.

Banned Book Scavenger Hunt
Brought to you by PLG (Progressive Librarians Guild)

Simmons College, open hours
Explore the Simmons College Boston campus while on the hunt for representations of Banned Books! Snap a photo of the items and post them to social media using #SimmonsBannedBookHunt17. The student(s) with the most found items will win a prize at the end of the week!
Lunch Time Read Aloud
Brought to you by Beatley Library and LISSA (Library and Information Science Student Association) 

12pm-2pm, Lefavour Lobby
Beatley Library and SLIS are hosting lunchtime readings from Monday 9/25- Friday 9/29 from 12pm-2pm. These readings will take place in the Lefavour Lobby. We are inviting anyone who would like to participate to read for 1- 5 minutes from their favorite banned or challenged book. These readings will be recorded and posted to the Simmons YouTube page. Online community members are also invited to participate by recording themselves reading from their favorite book, and sharing it with us online by using the hashtag #SimmonsGetCaught2017.


How to participate:
-Use this Google Sheet to sign up in advance for a specific day and time to read.
-Show up to see what all of the fuss is about, browse the books, and do a cold read.
-Check out your favorite book and record yourself reading from the comfort of your own home, office, or podium.

With help from Stacie Collins, SLIS CHL alumni and Beatley Librarian, and Des Alaniz, the Beatley Library Zine intern, we will be putting on a workshop on how to make zines from banned graphic novels.

Faculty Panel: Silenced Voices
Brought to you by PLG (Progressive Librarians Guild), SoCS (Students of Color at SLIS), & SCIRRT (Student Chapter International Relations Round Table)

Come hear SLIS faculty Janet Ceja and Rachel Williams and Beatley Librarian, Stacie Collins, discuss banned and challenged materials, and their effects on identity. Food will be provided. This event will be recorded and posted on the SLIS YouTube channel

 
Wednesday 9/27:
Spectra Poetry SLAM

As part of Banned Books week, Spectra is putting on a LGBT-focused poetry slam and open Mic night in the faculty/student dining room. Come along to read your own work, your favorites, or even small segments from banned books with an LGBT+ theme. Listeners also welcome! A microphone and amp will be provided.

SoCS Movie Screening: Persepolis

Banned Books Ball

Join LISSA for Banned Book themed trivia, themed costume contest, and dance party! Light snacks and open bar will be provided.
