Mario H. Ramirez is a Ph.D. Candidate at UCLA, and will be visiting to give a presentation on his research. This presentation is based on research conducted in 2016 at two human rights organizations in San Salvador, El Salvador: Servicio Social Pasionista (SSPAS) and the Fundación de Estudios para la Aplicación de Derechos (FESPAD).
Besides providing a brief overview of the history of gang activity in El Salvador in the post-conflict era, this discussion will include an analysis of government policies drafted to address gang violence, the role of the National Police in attempts to curb it, and the subsequent human rights violations committed against gang members and poor youth documented by FESPAD and SSPAS. In addition, the presentation will look comparatively at the state of human rights discourse in El Salvador, and the contrasts that exist between the period of the civil war and now.
Note: If you don’t have a Simmons parking pass, parking for the event is limited to street parking and area garages (the closest garage at the MFA closes at 11 PM). Plan on carpooling, taking public transit, rideshare service, taxi, etc.
