PeerJ: Could It Transform Open Access Publishing?

Here’s some food for thought for Open Access Week.

This ACRL TechConnect blog post looks at PeerJ, an OA publisher which seeks to introduce a new model of OA. PeerJ offers a low-cost, one-time fee to article authors as long as they go on to participate in the peer review process for other articles in the system. It also uses an open review process in which authors and reviewers are known to each other in an effort to promote a social-networky community.

This is contrasted with existing “green” and “gold” OA models which work to implement OA from within traditional publishing systems.
