Hello everyone out there in library land! Welcome back to school. If you've found your way to this site, that means you are probably interested in the Special Libraries Association and I encourage you to sign up for our listserv, follow us on Facebook, and Twitter. You may be confused about what the "Special Library Association" is though, and I get it, it's a pretty general name.
Basically, SLA represents information professionals who work outside the realm of public libraries, school libraries, and general academic libraries. Special Librarians and Archivists also tend to work closely, and many do double-duty as both. So who are these people and where do they work? Here are a few examples:
- Law Librarians
- Solo Librarians
- Finance Librarians
- Taxonomists
- Indexers
- Healthcare and Hospital Service Librarians
- Information professionals who work at places like EBSCO, ProQuest, Springshare
- Special Academic Librarians (business libraries, medical libraries, rare book libraries)
- Content Strategists at ad agencies, universities, magazines, marketing firms
- Usability Professionals
- Science and Research Organization Librarians at places such as Draper and Raytheon
- Government Librarians/Archivsits in the Military, Transportation Department, and many more...
So as you can see, it's a broad group of people and there are lots of career paths to explore. If you would like to learn more, think about joining SLA New England at their October 13th mini-conference! It will be a great opportunity to network and explore new and exciting prospects. I will definitely be there and SLA@Simmons will be sponsoring students to go. More on this soon.
In addition, SLA@Simmons is also looking for a Treasurer, Archivist and Web Master - so put in your name for the mid-September nominations.
Hope to see you all around campus!
-Sophy, SLA@Simmons President
