SLA Day on the Job

Dear GSLIS Students,

Are you interested in learning more about a particular library or area of special librarianship? Would you like to talk to an LIS-practitioner in depth about their work?

The New England Chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) will once again conduct its annual fall “Day on the Job” (DOTJ) program. DOTJ provides an opportunity for you to meet with an experienced SLA member and learn more about his/her work.

Note: despite its name, DOTJ does not refer to any specific day; it is whatever is convenient for you and your host and there is no set format. Depending on the host’s availability, the meeting can be a day-long job shadow or an in-depth conversation.

We will match students as closely as possible with a library in the subject speciality of their choice. Placements will be based on student preferences as well as host availability. Your host will then contact you to make arrangements for your visit. Only your name, email address, and telephone numbers will be provided to the host libraries. SLA membership is not required (but encouraged!) for participation in the “Day on the Job” program.

Please also keep in mind this is a profession experience, thus it is important to put your best “face” forward, i.e. business dress and comportment. This is an excellent opportunity to network and discuss future interests so it is best to come with an upbeat and polished attitude.
