Upcoming SLA@Simmons Professional Panel: February 19, 2014, 4:30 PM

SLA@Simmons is pleased to announce that we're holding a Professional Panel this upcoming Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 4:30-5:45 PM. This event is a great way to learn about the professions you're interested in firsthand from the people who hold those jobs right now, network with professionals, pre-professionals and, of course, other GSLIS students. Here's a little bit about the professionals who will be headlining this SLA event...

Jamie Emery – Senior Library Research Manager – Fidelity Investments
(GSLIS Alumnus)

Jamie Emery manages the research workflow for Fidelity Investments' innovation catalyst group, the Center for Applied Technology. He conducts research to assist senior leaders in making timely and informed decisions. In addition, Jamie manages vendor relationships with major IT advisory firms and monitors emerging technology trends for applicability to business objectives.

Claudette Newhall – Librarian – Congregational Library
(GSLIS Alumna)

"I joined the Congregational Library in January 2005 as Associate Librarian and was promoted to Librarian in April of 2010. My previous career was in banking and financial services where I managed a mortgage and consumer loan department. My prior professional library position was as Info Center Collections and Systems Manager at Fidelity Investments. I received my MSLIS from Simmons in 1998. While attending Simmons, I worked in special, law, and academic libraries, and archives. I have a BS in English and a Masters of Education from the University of Maine, Orono.
I am active in the American Theological Library Association (ATLA), Special Libraries Association (SLA), and the Simmons College GSLIS Alumni Association and served as its President in 2006-2007. I offer an annual workshop for church librarians and regularly give tours of the Library. I contribute regularly to the Library’s blog, Beacon Street Diary, and Facebook page. I’ve spoken to Dr. Matarazzo’s class on Corporate Libraries, appeared on panels at ATLA conferences, and presented poster sessions on our church records digitization project.
Currently, I supervise a staff of five and function as the Personnel Officer for the Library and Archives. Over the past two years, I have reviewed hundreds of resumes for positions of Associate Archivist, Assistant Librarian for Cataloging and Reference, Digital Archivist, Rare Books Cataloger, and an Administrative and Development Assistant. I’ve recruited and supervised both volunteers and interns from Simmons and other GSLIS programs."

Kathleen Schmidt – Director, Recruiting Services - AccuFile
(GSLIS Alumna)

Kathleen Schmidt graduated from Simmons GSLIS in 2006 and is pursuing an MBA at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics. Kathleen recently joined AccuFile as the new Director, Recruiting Services. In addition to her work as a recruiter, she co-founded a successful start-up and served as the lead organizer of the first regular TEDx in the state of New Hampshire. Kathleen will address challenges and opportunities of the job search, discuss non-traditional career paths for librarians, the importance of having an entrepreneurial mindset and giving back to the profession.

Greg Beier – Director of Sustainability – Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center
After seeing the July 2012 premiere of the documentary film “Digital Dharma,” Greg was deeply inspired to be part of the ongoing efforts to sustain and expand Gene Smith’s extraordinary digital preservation of Tibetan texts. Greg joined TBRC in September 2012, and is responsible for building TBRC’s sustainability and public image. He is excited and honored to share its digital treasure trove and platform design on a vast scale.
Bringing TBRC to the world’s attention and fundraising for its sustainability is the perfect way for Greg to merge his Tibetan Buddhist interest with his career in finance. Greg spent a decade consulting to European and Asian institutions. In 2000, he joined Perinvest as a Vice President in London, specializing in alternative investments. Prior to Perinvest, Greg was at the Milken Institute in Santa Monica, California where he co-authored studies on the Asian Financial Crisis that were published by the Institute and Forbes. Previously, Greg was a Principal at Hanmi Capital, a Korean venture capital firm. He started at Shearson Lehman in 1989 in New York.

Michael Sheehy – Head of Literary Research
As chief editor for the TBRC library, Michael works to ensure that a high quality of standards are being met for publication. He creates and publishes new outlines while he annotates and enriches the deep categorizations of existing outlines. In working to develop the TBRC library’s research capacity, he couples scholarly inquiry with the technological resources available at TBRC to help advance viewer access points in the library. Such projects include developing taxonomies of literary topics, lineage transmission modules, and rich classificatory mechanisms of place (site), person, and works. Michael also seeks out and acquires rare and unpublished texts for inclusion in the TBRC digital holdings.

Lobsang Shastri – Research Associate
Lobsang graduated with Shastri degree (equivalent to BA) from Central University of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, Varanasi, U.P., India. Translator for the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA), Dharamsala, in 1985 and chief librarian, 1988-2009. Tibetan language instructor, Dept. of History of Religion, Oslo University, 1994. Lecturer/Visiting scholar, Dept. of Central Eurasian Studies, Indiana University, Bloomington, April-Dec 2006. Editor-in-chief of Tibet Journal, LTWA. Member of the XIIth and XIIIth Tibetan Parliament in Exile, 1995-2005.
