Professional Development Reimbursements

 What is the LISSA Professional Development Reimbursement program?

The Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA) will reimburse SLIS students up to 100% of certain expenses (up to $250 per fiscal year, July 1-June 29th) incurred by engaging in LIS-related professional development activities.

Who can apply for PDR funds?

Any currently enrolled GSLIS student – at the Boston or Mount Holyoke campus, as well as online students – can apply for PDR funds. Doctoral, Certificate, and Children’s Lit students are not eligible for PDR funds. Students must be registered for a course in the semester for which they are requesting reimbursement. Additionally, SLIS students may submit reimbursements for events attended in the term directly following degree completion.

What counts as “professional development?”

The PDR fund will reimburse you for conference or workshop registration, travel expenses, lodging, professional organization membership fees. Our intention is not to limit you to the previous expenses, however; if you can justify that a particular expense helps you build your resume or your understanding of the LIS field, it may be eligible for reimbursement.

Can PDR funds be used to pay for software?

No, PDR funds are used for career development activities like attending a workshop or conference, joining a professional society like ALA, etc. SLIS students can receive some hardware and software discounts on Dell and Mac products. When do I apply for PDR funds?

There are two calls for PDR requests annually – one in the Fall and one in the Spring. Each call for requests will occur within the first month of the Fall and Spring semester. Students should request reimbursement for events occurring between July 1 and December 31 of any given year during that year’s Fall semester; reimbursement for events occurring between January 1 and June 30 of any given year should be requested during that year’s Spring semester.

Please note that PDR funds are given out first to students applying for funds for the current semester; applying for funds for an event that happened in a previous semester may decrease the amount of PDR funds received.
