Here are some commonly asked questions from site supervisors.
I am interested in hosting a student. How do I get started?
Excellent news! Please email the Field Experience Team at [email protected] to get started.
How do I submit a project in FXMS?
Please see the FXMS page for instructions.
When will I be notified about the student(s) placed with me?
Students are asked to get in touch with their site supervisors once they have been placed.
If your institution requires a background check or other onboarding procedures, you will hear from your student during the second week of the semester. If it does not, you will hear from your student during the third week of the semester.
Looking for more specific dates? Pleae check Simmons’ academic calendar here.
Why doesn’t SLIS notify me about the placement?
Students are practicing their professional communication skills and are expected to reach out. We do tell them that you are expecting to hear from them; and will provide them with an email template this year.
Can I review the student’s resume?
No. Since this is a curricular opportunity and a learning experience, we do not allow site supervisors to reject students based on their qualifications. If your institution requires a more rigorous selection process, you may want to consider LIS 512: Advanced Field Experience.
Can students receive compensation for field experiences?
Yes! While we do not require or request sites to compensate students for their field work, we do allow sites to pay students for their work.
Does my project fit the parameters needed for a field experience?
Please reach out to us at [email protected]. Our team is happy to discuss your project description to determine how it fits within our field experience program.
Can school librarians host a Simmons student?
At Simmons, the School Library Teacher Concentration has its own curriculum-based field experience program that meets DESE reqirements. For more information about that program, please visit the School Library Teacher Program webpage or email Melanie Kimball ([email protected]).
I cannot find my student in FXMS for a midpoint or final evaluation!
Your student’s account is tied to their full Simmons email address ([email protected]). If you cannot find your student, please ask them for their full Simmons email address (especially if their preferred name is different than the name we have on file). If this doesn’t resolve the issue, please email us at [email protected].
