Part of the Indo-Pak composite culture of Hindustaani music, it is a song of the Thar desert and has been sung through centuries. The tune has been used in movies (<a title=\"Dor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XbkfUVDQkgU\" target=\"_blank\">Dor<\/a>, in <a title=\"Lekin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9SnFo2UMvQw\" target=\"_blank\">Lekin<\/a> by Lata Mangeshkar with lyrics changed, the Oscar-winning <a title=\"Little Terrorist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3Crv8FGRU6g\" target=\"_blank\">Little Terrorist<\/a>, and recently in <a title=\"99.9FM by Zila Khan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wdYIzpgPuw8\" target=\"_blank\">99.9FM by Zila Khan<\/a>), in Classical Music albums (Ustad Zakir Hussein in the album &#8216;Music of the Deserts&#8217;), in TV soaps (<a title=\"Balika Vadhu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=foHgMZj7YFE\" target=\"_blank\">Balika Vadhu<\/a>), reality-singing shows (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-Au5XknNgVg\" target=\"_blank\">Raja Hasan in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa<\/a>, <a title=\"Aishwarya in Chote Ustad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ROC-dxTv48M\" target=\"_blank\">Aishwarya in Chote Ustad<\/a>), and sung by Singers from both Pakistan (<a title=\"Mehdi Hasan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TuvrYvIf2NQ\" target=\"_blank\">Mehdi Hasan<\/a>, <a title=\" Ustad Naseer-ud-din Saami\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eF7QpffGLE0\" target=\"_blank\">Ustad Naseer-ud-din Saami<\/a>) and India (<a title=\"Zarina Begum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fg45aNVDkvY\" target=\"_blank\">Allah Jilai Bai<\/a>, Manganiyars <a title=\"Manganiyars\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2CSHeWsFyLo\" target=\"_blank\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qgtSAwq9JNY\" target=\"_blank\">2<\/a>, <a title=\"3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6nB1xgROm-c\" target=\"_blank\">3<\/a>). As Siddhartha puts it, the Manganiyars are &#8220;a great example of Hindu-Islamic synthesis &#8211; practicing muslims who sing praise songs to Hindu gods!\u00a0 And that is besides their musicality!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2005-06, I made a <a title=\"painting\" href=\"http:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/naresh\/creativity\/painting\/watercolor\/padharo-mahre-des\/\" target=\"_blank\">painting<\/a> with the same title<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Painting by Naresh 'Padharo Mahre Des'\" src=\"https:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/naresh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/flutist.jpg\" width=\"600\" class=\"largeframe\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After my wedding on 8 December 2003, I had 10-hours of video footage. I&#8217;d imagined that I&#8217;d edit the video into a 10-minute or 30-minute version (where this song would find a prominent place). I haven&#8217;t yet gotten around to doing that (as of 7 Jun 2009), but found some time today to create 4 shorts 30-second music videos from my <a title=\"wedding photos  (archa-na-resh wedding)\" href=\"https:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/106036997884600551473\/MyRichColourfulMarwariWeddingInASikkimeseWinter?authkey=Gv1sRgCMXrncLBo4X_qQE\" target=\"_blank\">wedding photos\u00a0 (archa-na-resh wedding)<\/a> using an online <a title=\"tool\" href=\"http:\/\/animoto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">tool<\/a>. These 4 versions are based on 4 versions of Kesariaya Baalam sung by different singers. The copyright for the music resides with the respective owners (I&#8217;ve used what was available freely on youtube).
