Fact, Fiction, and the Feed

Overview

Don Simmons facilitated a panel of SLIS peers including: Jojo Jacobson, Shengang Wang, Naresh Agarwal, and Sanda Erdelez, to discuss information literacy and the growing emergence of AI within the public sector. The panelists begin their discussion with a general inquisition of what information literacy is within their work as well as a general definition that faces students today in a growing social media climate. As the discussion continued, each panelist shared personal experiences and the difficulties of accurate information spread in a space where sources are not necessarily reliable or without bias. Throughout each question, each panelist was able to shed light on how misinformation, disinformation, and AI have impacted how the next generation of students are educated within the context of SLIS. This discussion touched upon the impacts not only in the U.S., but the global impacts technology has created and how to incorporate understanding and use into our lives in terms of technology. Rounding out the discussion each panelist was able to touch upon the hopes and excitement they had in the future that they see with the incorporation of media literacy and the advancements of AI.
