Description
Everett Library at Queens University of Charlotte is seeking one practicum student to assist the Archives and Special Collections Librarian with the inventory, organization, preservation, and digitization (including the creation of metadata) of the Burwell Collection during the Fall 2024 semester. This work will increase the accessibility and visibility of materials with lasting historical value and high research interest. The student will be expected to:
Read provided materials including task force reports, articles, web pages, and book passages to learn about the Burwell family and the history of Queens University.
Follow proper handling procedures for various types and conditions of archival materials, as directed by the Archives and Special Collections Librarian.
Ensure that physical materials in the collection are properly organized and housed with access and preservation in mind.
Review existing finding aids for collection and revise as needed.
Digitize physical and born-digital materials.
Create and metadata for digitized materials.
Upload and organize digitized materials to ContentDM to create an online collection (time permitting).
Skills and Experience
Required:
Project must be completed as a practicum for credit
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Dedication to assisting the College in achieving its vision and mission. Patron focus, providing quality service, and a willingness to assist as needed are expectations for all employees.
Previous coursework in archives and/or special collections
Experience with Microsoft Excel
Preferred:
Experience with ContentDM
Schedule
This is a semester-long practicum. Shifts can be scheduled any time during Everett Library hours of operation. The student is responsible for satisfying any practicum requirements before the final exam date of the Fall 2024 semester through advance planning and communication with the Archives and Special Collections Librarian.
