The Lehigh Libraries Special Collections is currently seeking an MLIS field experience student to perform archival processing, subject analysis, and outreach activities for the “Letters of Lewis and Carter Families of New York, 1914-1949” to strengthen support for teaching and learning.
Responsibilities include: by applying MPLP folder level processing rules, inventorying, rehousing the collection, and creating finding aids and other tools using ArchivesSpace software and data content standards such as DACS and reviewing the collection’s content for purposes of conservation to enhance discovery and access.
In addition to processing the collection at the folder level, as time permits, the intern, with the supervisor’s assistance, may develop learning tools, such as LibGuides and lesson plans, for further research and curricular activities.
The collection consists of approximately (unsorted, many unopened envelopes of) 1500 items of diaries, short fiction drafts, letters addressed to (mostly) Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Lewis of Norwich NY; Mr. and Mrs. Leon S. Carter of Greene NY.
Learning Outcomes:
The intern will contribute to instruction and outreach initiatives in Lehigh Libraries Special Collections, including the expansion of an instructional program based on the Letter Collection for faculty and students.
The intern will develop descriptions of resources for the library's website, assist with the preparation of library guides, lesson plans and other student engagement activities with creative approaches to marketing to stimulate interest in primary source materials.
The intern will cultivate new relationships with faculty and graduate students and work with them to develop and evaluate instructional services, particularly involving the Letters Collection.
The intern will acquire proficiency in DACS and metadata standards, including archival processing skills inventorying, cataloging and classifying personal letters, diaries, manuscripts, etc.
The intern will acquire content analysis skills for research and reference services during the second year of the project.
