Project Details
The Temple Emmanuel archive has come to the Worcester Historical Museum from Temple Emmanuel Sinai because of space restraints, the archive was moved to our headquarters at 30 Elm St. About 90 boxes of Jewish materials needs processing. It may require one or more interns, so a 60 hour position may not complete the task. The intern(s) should understand the Jewish faith, its symbolisms and rituals.
Temple Emanuel (Reform) was established in 1921 and 111 Elm St was its home from 1923 to 1949. In 1949 it erected a large synagogue on May St, which was considerably expanded in 1961. The congregation grew rapidly to become the Jewish community's largest, with a membership of over 1,300 families. The Temple Emanuel congregation that formerly occupied the building merged with Temple Sinai in 2013 and moved to 661 Salisbury St. Worcester State University bought the temple building on May St in 2015 and uses it for classroom spaces.
