Project Details
A group of 2-3 LIS 438 students will appraise, create a processing plan, arrange, and describe the Susan K. Martin papers. Susan K. Martin, now a retired librarian, was a 1960s SLIS graduate. The collection (about 20 boxes) date from the 1970s-early 2000s and document Martin’s career as both a Tech Services Librarian and Library Director. Many records detail the transition from card catalogs to OPACs at major libraries in the United States. Types of materials include: calendars/planners, notebooks, ALA meeting minutes and committee files, National Education Telecommunications Organization meeting materials, Harvard University Libraries files, library briefings, standards, Martin’s dissertation, correspondence, directories, History Associates Library Trends files, Tufts University files, and analyses of the Library of Congress cataloging standards and systems. The project will be supervised by Kelsey Kolbet, Archivist & Digital Initiatives Librarian, in collaboration with Zoe Johnson, Archives & Digital Initiatives Fellow. The two will work together to strengthen Zoe’s management skills as a part of her fellowship experience. The Martin papers will eventually be added to the Simmons University Archives’ manuscript collection and made available to both the Simmons University community and external researchers.
