Site Description
The NFPA Research Library & Archives exists to support the mission and business work of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The archive is dedicated to the history of the association through the collections of NFPA publications, and also to the history of fires, fire protection, and fire and life safety.
The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA, established in 1896, is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.
The NFPA library is a different experience than many other settings because it is a non-profit/Special library in a corporate setting that is not associated with the government, academia, or the public. It provides the ability to become familiar with balancing all aspects of libraries and archives. There is a small staff (2) that is responsible for all archives, library, and records management duties throughout the association, which allows for the ability to do a variety of tasks, and learn about many different aspects of archives and librarianship while doing an internship.
NFPA has several projects for Archives 438 internships which include, but are not limited to: processing conference audio and visual materials, papers related to fire investigations, the papers of past presidents and processing papers from related non-profit associations and donors.
*** Since the pandemic, our business has moved to a 'mostly remote' work model. The Library & Archives staff usually go into the office only 1 day/week (Typically on Tuesdays, Wednesday, or Thursdays.) ***
