Project Details
Focus: the skills, knowledge and attributes a librarian needs to have to support East Asian Studies in a liberal arts college environment with a specific focus on supporting Korean studies.
Rationale: Korean studies is booming at the moment, but with the exception of the major research institutions who are producing the new Ph.D.s there are few academic libraries that have the knowledge or language skills to be able to support the needs of the newly hired faculty. In the Oberlin Group of 83 libraries, for example, there is only 1 East Asian studies librarian (at Oberlin College) and the handful of the East Asian studies librarians who are in small collections tend to have Chinese language strengths and sometimes Japanese. We have not yet tackled the specific challenges of providing support for Korean studies at libraries without a Korean specialist.
Proposed Deliverables:
Using the Handbook for Korean Studies Librarianship Outside of Korea (2014) as a reference, the intern will create a list of recommendations appropriate for small collections: vendors, database subscriptions, interlibrary loan options, and collection development guidelines for Korean language materials.
Develop a list of recommendations for additions to the Korean language learner collection for Neilson
