Summary
The JD Marston Photography Collection consists of over 600 black-and-white negatives and over 1800 color negatives of various sizes. The project is to scan the JD Marston Collection negatives and transparencies according to archival best practices and to give copies to the donor and upload them into our digital repositories, JSTOR and Digital Commons.

Background
JD Marston donated his collection of negatives, transparencies, and prints to Emerson College Archives and Special Collections (ECASC) in two accruals in 2019. He notified ECASC in 2022 that he planned to sell the copyright for the images, and in 2023 asked for an inventory of all the items we have. In May 2023, he requested that ECASC scan all black and white negatives as well as the color transparencies.

Objectives
Create preservation quality images and metadata that ECASC can preserve in the future.
Display low-res versions online in JSTOR and Digital Commons, following the stipulations in the Deed of Gift.
Provide copies of the images (300 dpi) and metadata to JD Marston for his project to sell the copyright for his images.

Project Plan: Digitization and Metadata creation
The project will begin by scanning the physical black-and-white negatives and after the color negatives and transparencies. The images will be scanned according to best practices using an EPSON Scanner and then processed in Photoshop. The negatives will be cleaned to the best of our abilities, before scanning them, using archival best practices. The negatives will be scanned at a high resolution and then resized to 300 dpi with the dimensions provided. Quality control will be limited to ensuring that the item is straight and that imperfections are not caused by the scanner or scanning technique. As images are scanned, metadata will be created using a metadata template worksheet. The metadata will be based on the information on the item. If there is no information, we will review JD’s website and/or the database he is going to send us of his images. If information is still not available, metadata will be created using standard best practices.

Project Plan: Placing Images Online
Create a new collection in JSTOR. Upload the images and use the metadata spreadsheet to bulk upload the metadata. Items will be view-only.
Create a new sub-collection in the ECASC portion of Digital Commons. Upload the images and metadata. Items will be view-only.
