The experience will expose them to numerous facets of the public library but with a specific focus in teen services. The internship program will concurrently work with Simmons in being an internship site therefore offering credit for the participation by the interns. The internship experience will focus on that of observation in Teen Central and in the five teen serviced branches in the Boston Public Library system; East Boston, Grove Hall, Hyde Park, Mattapan and Roxbury and that of the professional duties of the Teen Librarians coupled with individual work focusing on the inner workings of a public library. The experience will culminate with a research paper on the experience.
LIS 512 - Internship in Library and Information Science
The internship involves a minimum of 130 hours of field experience that represents an important learning experience for the student. As a 3-credit course, it has a significant hands-on learning component. Through discussion with key personnel in the organization and working under professional librarian supervision, the student gains hands-on experience in the information environment. Prerequisite: 18 credit hours including all core requirements.
Length of time: 14 weeks for the semester, 9 hours a week for a total of 130 hours. Begins September 5-December 15. When: Friday meetings at 2:00 pm and 8 hours weekly of virtual and in person work.

Capacity: Two interns a semester.

Goals:

Observe teen programs.
Read professional and academic articles having to do with teen services, programming, outreach service, and discuss with Supervisor.
Actively participate in weekly meetings with Supervisor.
Meet and interview all of the Boston Public Library Teen Librarians and Youth Services Manager.
Participate in a mock interview with the Manager of Youth Services.
Provide a comprehensive and detailed research paper of the internship experience.
