Project Details
In consultation with the Archivist, interns will choose from several collections or discrete series of materials to work with. Currently, available projects include:
Processing a collection of a former staff member's files,
Processing of a series in Collections Department records, which can focus on a variety of projects or collection areas, including digital materials, if the intern is interested.
Digitization of a portion of the 35mm slide collection produced by the community events team.
Furthermore, after the initial introduction to the holdings and the institution's history, if there is a particular area of interest, a new project can be created when possible.
Interns will be provided the opportunity to select which project complements personal research interests.
Intern's processing of collections involves completing an initial survey and processing plan. Following review and approval by the Archivist, interns will arrange materials and complete necessary preservation actions. Finalized descriptions and locations will be added to an inventory spreadsheet and used to create a PDF finding aid.
As appropriate, in addition to the arrangement and description of physical records, projects may involve digitizing materials. Digitization may include using a flatbed scanner or DSLR camera to create surrogates of records and creating appropriate metadata to describe resulting digital files.
Additionally, if interns are interested in digital preservation, some projects may incorporate or focus solely on processing digital collections.
