Project Details
The C. Bradford Mitchell Collection comprises photographs and prints, ephemera, books, and papers associated with Mitchell's work as a maritime historian. Mitchell served as an instructor in the Army Air Corps during WWII, and after the war was a historian within the federal Maritime Administration and the American Merchant Marine Institute, the latter of which he served as director for 6 years. He was an involved member of SSHSA, serving on the board and editor of the society's quarterly magazine, and contributing articles. The collection includes elements of his research and work in these capacities, as well as his notes and materials associated with his contribution to the shipping register "Merchant Steam Vessels of the United States: 1790-1868," otherwise known as “The Lytle-Holdcamper List” which was published in 1975. This collection is very minimally processed. The intern candidate will assist in consolidating his collection and providing more detailed description, and a finding aid if possible.
