Project Details
The Center for Lowell History serves as one of the main access points for the history of the city of Lowell and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
We are looking for help with our City Engineers Photograph Collection. City Engineers are responsible for the documentation and maintenance of city buildings. Therefore, throughout Lowell's history, the City Engineering Department has taken many photographs of various streets and locations around Lowell. This collection consists of photographs taken between 1900-1940.
Although some of the collection has been digitized upon request, we are looking to coordinate a more concentrated digitization effort to share these photographs online. The intern in this position would focus on digitizing photographs from specific neighborhoods, starting with the Portuguese neighborhood, Back Central.
To get an idea of the types of photos that are included in the collection, you can view some of the photographs on the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/lowell-ceng
This project would be great for someone interested in photographic archives who also wants experience with the process of digitizing. An intern would identify photos to be digitized, scan each image, write appropriate metadata, and facilitate upload to the Internet Archive.
