Site Description
The Martha's Vineyard Museum is a place-centered museum devoted to the history and culture of the island of Martha's Vineyard, MA. Founded in 1922 as the Dukes County Historical Society, it is currently housed in a restored 1895 US Marine Hospital in Vineyard Haven, and also oversees the 1766 Thomas Cooke House in Edgartown, and the historic Edgartown Harbor and East Chop lighthouses, which are open seasonally. The Museum's main campus is open year-round and (in addition to the Research Library) houses five permanent and three changing exhibit galleries, and a classroom space, gift shop, and cafe.

The Research Library is a public space, open to Museum visitors on weekdays. Its resources are available, free of charge, to anyone with an interest in the history and culture of Martha's Vineyard. Its it serves as the access point for the Museum's holdings of non-3D collection items, including 4,000 volumes, 400 archival collections, 1200 vertical files, 1,500 oral histories, 500 maps and charts, and 50,000 images.

The Library receives approximately 700-750 inquiries each year, ranging from casual questions about the Museum and its holdings to in-depth requests to review material from multiple collections, The Research Librarian -- the only paid staff member associated with the Library -- answers inquiries, facilitates researchers' access to materials, oversees the digitization program and the development of digital research tools, and (in the absence of a staff archivist) oversee the processing, arrangement, and cataloging of incoming archival materials, and the backlog of materials received in previous years.
