Project Details
Working directly with the Collections Services Archivist, the intern will support intellectual control of collections at the Center for the History of Medicine and support routine reparative description work on the Center’s finding aids.
Using the Center’s protocol for Level 1 description, the intern will generate single-level DACS compliant finding aids using ArchivesSpace. Level 1 description is used for small collections (often a single item, single folder, or single box). (Intern may also Level 1 process a larger collection that requires minimal preservation, restrictions, and arrangement).
The intern will also review collection material to determine whether appropriate descriptive terminology has been used. If reparative description is needed, the intern will read the Center’s Guidelines for Inclusive and Conscientious Description to guide their proposed changes to the description. They will then follow the Center’s workflow for making finding aid updates.
Specific duties include:
• Using the Center’s guidance for Level 1 processing to generate description
• Working within ArchivesSpace to enhance or create Resource records (finding aids)
• Enhancing or creating MARC bibliographic and holdings records in Alma
• Examining collections material to determine whether the existing description is appropriate
• Drafting reparative description and performing reparative description update workflow
