Project Details
Letters, diaries and some photographs relating to Orange Frost Small--a Civil War veteran who was later admitted to the Maine State Hospital. He was likely suffering from schizophrenia or a similar disease. The diary details part of his time in the war and his time in the state hospital--including many thoughts on religion. The letters and paperwork relate to his property and providing for the care of his son among relatives (siblings of Orange).

For the most part, the collection is well organized, but could use a good appraisal, description, rehousing and some light arrangement in addition to the creation of a finding aid. The collection also consists of research notes about the family compiled by the donor (a direct descendant of Orange Frost Small).
Are you willing to complete two evaluations of your students progress through out the course of the semester?
Yes
Requirements
This could be a triggering collection for some, so the the student must be comfortable working with collections that deal with the description of mid-19th century mental healthcare and the first-hand experiences and impressions of a patient considered to be mentally ill.

Student should be well versed in the basics of archival description and arrangement and be comfortable with creating a robust finding aid. Students with a little genealogy experience are especially encouraged to apply--most of the family relationships represented in the collection are obvious, but making them clear in the finding aid is important.

Experience with creation of EAD finding aids is appreciated, but certainly not required. We're moving (slowly) toward converting our finding aids. When possible, we try to create an EAD version to for newly processed collections.
