Site Description
Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, preserves the Georgian mansion built in 1759 that was General George Washington's first major headquarters of the American Revolution in 1775-76 and the home of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow from 1837 until his death in 1882. The house is furnished with artifacts original to the Longfellow family, who lived in the house until the mid-20th century and donated the house and contents to the National Park Service in 1973. The archival collections are primarily the personal papers of four related New England families - Longfellow, Wadsworth, Appleton, and Dana - as well as institutional records documenting the preservation of the historic site since 1913.
