Site Description
Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters NHS was the first major headquarters of General George Washington in the American Revolution (1775-1776) and the family home of eminent American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, from 1837 to 1882. The site operates as a house museum, furnished to the Longfellow family's occupancy. The archival collections (about 450 linear feet) consist largely of the personal papers of four interrelated families - Longfellow, Appleton, Wadsworth, and Dana - as well as institutional records of the site's management as a museum beginning in about 1913. These collections provide context for much of the house's furnishings and other objects in the museum collections.

The archives research room is accessed by a flight of historic stairs and does not have wheelchair access. The visitor center and first floor of the house are fully accessible, and the archivist can provide alternate accommodations with advance notice.
