Site Description
The Shutesbury Public Library is a new 4,500-square-foot facility scheduled to open in late December 2025. Shutesbury, Massachusetts, is a small rural community of 1,750 residents in Franklin County. The Town of Shutesbury was the recipient of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners’ Small Library Pilot Project grant, which funded 75% of the construction costs. In addition, the Friends of the M.N. Spear Memorial Library raised nearly $1,000,000 to support the project.
The need for an expanded library was first identified in 1995, shortly after the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program began. The current M.N. Spear Memorial Library is a one-room, 900-square-foot building that has remained largely unchanged since it was constructed in 1902.
This is an exciting moment for library users in Shutesbury as the community prepares to open a modern, welcoming new library that will serve residents for generations to come.
