Project Details
The BPL Archives Department offers an LIS 438 field placement project focused on learning to use ArchivesSpace and building familiarity with DACS (Describing Archives a Content Standard). In this field experience, the intern will revise the finding aid for the Lane/Mead Boston Maritime Collection, to improve accuracy and usability and bring it up to DACS compliancy. Tasks include implementing a new intellectual arrangement designed by BPL’s Lead Archivist in consultation with the donor, adding and updating descriptive elements to meet DACS requirements, and verifying and updating container information. Learning objectives include entering and editing data in ArchivesSpace, understanding and applying DACS, rehousing archival collections, and writing finding aid notes.
This field placement is supervised by Lead Archivist Eve Neiger. Intern will meet regularly with the intern supervisor to learn new skills, discuss project progress, and address questions and concerns as they arise. Intern will also have the chance to meet with other BPL archivists and Special Collections staff, join team meetings, and help page collections.
