Course Overview:
With the increasing challenges posed by climate change and the wealth of legal heritage housed at Yale Law Library, I aim to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment of the library stacks and their conditions. This project will offer practical benefits, addressing the importance of starting conservation and preservation initiatives and effort to safeguard its valuable resources.
Under the supervision of Rare Book Librarian Kathryn James, I will undertake this assessment, while also consulting with professionals at Yale's conservation and preservation center to enrich the project with their expertise. The course will integrate hands-on practical work with scholarly research to analyze potential threats to the collections and develop effective mitigation strategies.
Objectives:
● To assess risks associated with environmental and physical factors in the regular stacks.
● To analyze current preservation practices and identify areas for improvement.
● To design a disaster plan tailored to the needs of the Yale Law Library.
● To cultivate advanced skills in library risk management and preservation techniques.

Professional Development:
This project offers a unique opportunity to evaluate one of the most prestigious and grand law libraries in the legal field. It will deepen my understanding of the risk factors present in library environments and allow me to develop targeted preservation strategies for this esteemed institution. Through practical, hands-on work and focused mentorship, this experience will enhance my skills and knowledge in safeguarding the library and its collections from environmental and physical factors that naturally impact the longevity of books. Furthermore, it will directly contribute to advancing my career goals in conservation and preservation, strengthening my ability to lead initiatives that protect and sustain valuable library resources.
