Since its founding in 1971, the Rothko Chapel has been a beacon for human rights activists and modern art enthusiasts alike. The Rothko Chapel Archives currently amount to over 400,000 items stored in archival quality boxes and filing cabinets documenting the Chapel’s history. The majority of these materials are housed in two small rooms located in the Chapel Annex. Some older format video files are currently stored offsite. Specific content includes:
- PRINT: Chapel-related materials (correspondence, program information, transcripts, marketing collateral, programs); publications and papers produced by the Chapel; administrative documents (financial records, organizational minutes, contracts).
- AUDIO-VISUAL: Audio and video documentation of past Chapel events (in both accessible and inaccessible formats); photographs and negatives.
- ORIGIN: Original documents and correspondence pertaining to the creation of the Chapel as an independent entity, including architectural drawings.
- MEDIA: Newspapers and magazine clippings pertaining to the chapel or to key chapel personnel.
- BORN DIGITAL MATERIALS: Staff-created documents, converted to stable formats; born digital AV formats.
- OTHER: Academic papers and other projects funded by founders John and Dominique De Menil; human rights background materials; scrapbooks belonging to Mrs. De Menil.
