Site Description
Incorporated in 1817, the Portsmouth Athenaeum is a nonprofit research library and archives located in the heart of Market Square in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire. One of fewer than twenty remaining membership libraries in the United States, the Athenaeum established the archives in 1985 with the intent of making local history readily accessible to the public.
