America, of course, has a long history of robust and sometimes acrimonious public debate but few would disagree that social media, 24\/7 mobile connectivity, online anonymity, and rampant partisanship have badly damaged our ability to communicate rationally with each other. How can we move beyond trolling, cyberbullying, misogyny, racism and homophobia toward constructive and civil discussion? Are libraries part of the solution and if so, how? Let&#8217;s discuss!\n<p>This session will look at issues of civil discourse and libraries, especially focusing on challenges to online discourse including cyber-bullying and trolling along with the related issues of misogyny, racism, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The event will consist of a panel, followed by a response and presentation by the visiting scholar. From card catalogs to books themselves, the Internet is reshaping the modern library. In the process, libraries (and library staff) have been forced to contend with a wide range of complicated legal issues, ranging from public access to adult materials online to the privacy of patron borrowing records. At the same time, librarians must now be mindful of the personal risks that arise from their own use of the Internet.\n<p>A panel of experts will discuss cutting-edge Internet legal issues for libraries, followed by a presentation by author and digital safety expert Frederick Lane on Cybertraps for Librarians. This session will be on the topic of privacy, surveillance, and cybersecurity.
