Join ALA-SC for our upcoming library tour! This behind-the-scenes tour of the Cambridge Public Library will include: -Overview of the Laptop Kiosk with the Head of Research Dep’t -Book processing & circulation with the Head of Borrower Services -Overview of the Cambridge Room with the CPL Archivist -Q&A Session with CPL Deputy Director<\/p>\n

You are invited to join LIS 462 (Digital Libraries) unveil the Ruth Dorcas Gates Digital Scrapbook project. Please join in celebrating another addition to the Notable Women of Simmons College Digital Library.<\/p>\n

Since Notable Women’s inception, graduate library and information science students in a digital libraries course (taught by SLIS Professor Candy Schwartz), have been entrusted with scrapbooks from the Simmons College Archives to digitize and present in an electronic format. The students are responsible for the semester-long endeavor from conception through creation. Their work encompasses all aspects of the production process, including content, descriptive metadata, digitization, web development, intellectual property, and marketing. The library is built using open source software and the technical resources of the College. <\/i>

Mario H. Ramirez is a Ph.D. Candidate at UCLA, and will be visiting to give a presentation on his research. This presentation is based on research conducted in 2016 at two human rights organizations in San Salvador, El Salvador: Servicio Social Pasionista (SSPAS) and the Fundaci\u00f3n de Estudios para la Aplicaci\u00f3n de Derechos (FESPAD).<\/p>\n

Besides providing a brief overview of the history of gang activity in El Salvador in the post-conflict era, this discussion will include an analysis of government policies drafted to address gang violence, the role of the National Police in attempts to curb it, and the subsequent human rights violations committed against gang members and poor youth documented by FESPAD and SSPAS. In addition, the presentation will look comparatively at the state of human rights discourse in El Salvador, and the contrasts that exist between the period of the civil war and now.<\/p>\n
