Although LIS 438 is a required course for the Archives Management and Cultural Heritage Informatics concentrations; the course is open to all SLIS students.

I am currently juggling work and graduate courses, can I still take LIS 438?

Of course! We offer two options to fulfill the 60-hour field experience requirement. We will work to find you a placement that suits the hours you are available – including nights and weekends. If that doesn’t work for you, we also offer a fully remote practicum experience that mirrors the onsite field experience with tasks and intellectual work.

I work at an archives. Can I complete my field experience at my place of work?

Possibly. In order for this to occur, your site supervisor must meet with a member of the Field Experience Team to determine a discrete project that fits the requirements of the field placement. Email us at slisfieldexp@simmons.edu to inquire about this option.

Can I find my own field experience?

No. The Field Experience Team works to find placements for all students, as site supervisors must adhere to the project requirements for the course. If you have a connection at a repository close to you, we are happy to speak with the potential site supervisor to see if they can find a suitable project.

When will I find out about my placement?

You will be notified about your placement the second or third week of the semester, depending on whether or not your site requires a background check. All students can begin their fieldwork the fourth week of the semester.

What is my FXMS Username?

It is your full Simmons email: firstname.lastname@simmons.edu.

Here are some commonly asked questions from students about LIS 438 placements.
