{"id":234,"date":"2019-10-04T14:12:49","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T14:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/blogs\/fieldexperiences\/?page_id=234"},"modified":"2025-08-02T04:02:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T04:02:01","slug":"projects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/blogs\/fieldexperiences\/?page_id=234","title":{"rendered":"Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Projects for Introductory Field Experiences<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideal projects for introductory field experiences involve a small processing project (less than 5 linear feet).&nbsp; However, projects do vary in size and scope as the needs of sites vary.&nbsp; Students enrolled in LIS 438 may or may not have any prior experience working in archives.&nbsp; We consider a student\u2019s experience level when matching students with sites and projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Project Requirements:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All students need to be supervised by a professional while on site\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Supervisors cannot be volunteers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All work completed by students must be professional in nature\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No menial, sub-, or para-professional work is appropriate (e.g., getting coffee)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compensation is not required but is not prohibited. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>All projects are subject to approval by the SLIS Field Experience Manager.<\/em><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of past introductory field experiences include:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Processing and creating a finding aid in ArchivesSpace at a university archives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing the papers of a city employee for a history room at a local public library<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing genealogical records at a town historical society<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working with the processing team at an archival consulting company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing a doctor and professor\u2019s papers at a local hospital\u2019s archives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing artists\u2019 books at an art institute<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing city park plans at a city archives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing a small manuscript collection at a museum archives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing records at an architectural firm\u2019s archives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Deliverables<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are asked to produce a deliverable at the end of their field experience.
