This website is a resource for site supervisors and students interested in learning more about Simmons School of Library and Information Science’s (SLIS) curricular field opportunities.

This program provides students with valuable hands-on experiences and networking opportunities in the field.

SLIS offers two unique field experience options for students:

LIS 438: Introduction to Archival Theory and Practice is an introductory archives course that enables students to gain a solid understanding of archival theory and hands-on experience in archival practice.  It includes  60-hour field experience assignment.

LIS 512: Advanced Field Experience is a field experience in any type of library or information science institution for students who have completed 18 credits or more.  Projects are expected to be advanced in nature.  Placement for this field experience is led by the student’s interests and constitutes 130 hours of onsite work.  There is an online, academic component as well.

About the Field Experience Team & this Site

The SLIS Field Experience Team is dedicated to experiential learning.  We work with institutions across the country to locate relevant quality field experiences for our students.  This site is intended to be a resource for students and site supervisors interested in learning more about curricular field experiences associated with two specific SLIS course: LIS 438: Introduction to Archival Theory and Practice and LIS 512: Advanced Field Experience.

Please note: this site (and the Field Experience Team) does not handle practicum placement for the School Library Teacher Program.  Please contact Melanie Kimball ([email protected]), the director of the SLT concentration for assistance with those placements.
