From card catalogs to books themselves, the Internet is reshaping the modern library. In the process, libraries (and library staff) have been forced to contend with a wide range of complicated legal issues, ranging from public access to adult materials online to the privacy of patron borrowing records. At the same time, librarians must now be mindful of the personal risks that arise from their own use of the Internet. A panel of experts will discuss cutting-edge\u00a0Internet legal issues for libraries, followed by a presentation by author and digital safety expert Frederick Lane on Cybertraps for Librarians.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #444444\"><br \/>\n<\/span>This\u00a0session\u00a0will be\u00a0on the topic of privacy, surveillance, and cybersecurity.\u00a0 Again,\u00a0this\u00a0will\u00a0start\u00a0with the\u00a0panel\u00a0session, followed by a longer address and Q&amp;A with Fred.Panelists for the\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Friday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0session include\u00a0<b>Kade Crockford<\/b>\u00a0of the ACLU;\u00a0<b>Jessamyn West<\/b>, a noted technologist and librarian; SLIS alum and Director of Technology at Brookline Public Library\u00a0<b>Callan Bignoli<\/b>; and SLIS Alum and Reference Librarian at Bentley University\u00a0<b>Matthew van Sleet<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brought to you by School of Library and Information Science 2pm-5pm,\u00a0SOM 222 Allen Smith Scholar 2018 Event Few institutions have been more directly or more thoroughly challenged by digital technology than libraries.
