{"id":1284,"date":"2015-10-06T18:11:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T22:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/blogs\/asist\/?p=1284"},"modified":"2015-10-06T18:20:20","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T22:20:20","slug":"seems-that-journal-bills-are-beloved-like-cable-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/blogs\/asist\/?p=1284","title":{"rendered":"Seems that journal bills are beloved like cable bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I sit down and think about <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1MprSoL\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">ASIS&amp;T&#8217;s strategic plan<\/a> and what it means to me, I thought about the usual \u2026career, jobs, how to find the unlisted ones (hint hint strategic plan)\u2026.Then my thoughts went to the future a little bit more. What happens when I leave school and don&#8217;t have access to all the databases that I currently wander around in? There are public libraries, but what if I wanted more specific journals?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #800000\">There is value in membership to associations (like ASIS&amp;T) who offer journal subscriptions built into their membership.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #800000\">As an alum, you can have access to your schools library, but you usually need to come in person. Maybe university libraries could partner with off-campus alumni and share some cost?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #800000\">Along those same lines, maybe small business could partner with public libraries to purchase some of the larger databases of journals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Has this happened already? If you are a librarian can you envision this working? Tell us your story<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenlan.com\/collage\/dpla\/#gold\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">If someone wants to consult or work independently &#8211; How much would it cost me to buy my own suite of journals? What if I want to build a library for my organization and incorporate industry specific online journals?<\/a> It is impressive how libraries are managing the cost and this article from lj.libraryjournal.com highlights some of the costs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/lj.libraryjournal.com\/2013\/04\/publishing\/the-winds-of-change-periodicals-price-survey-2013\/#_\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">The Winds of Change | Periodicals Price Survey 2013<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Some summary highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The authors noted that &#8220;All elements of the information marketplace-libraries, publishers, and vendors- will continue to be impacted by the changing market conditions.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Changes in how a e-journal packaging is defined<\/li>\n<li>Cost rising easily over 6% in one year\n<ul>\n<li>High Schools and Public Libraries: 5-6%<\/li>\n<li>University and College libraries: 5-7%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open-Access\n<ul>\n<li>A business model to pay attention to<\/li>\n<li>Fair Access to Science and Technology Research Act (FASTR)\n<ul>\n<li>Open access to well-funded federal agencies research articles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>SCOAP3 and CERN working with publishers towards open access\u00a0 (oh, don&#8217;t go too crazy DaVinci conspirators\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>Open Access to science journals-great! They have funding\u2026but wait, say it isn\u2019t so\u2026the humanities are not big fans of open source? Oh the humanity of it all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So could LIS associations be one part of the solution? Can partnerships between entrepreneurs, small business, and libraries off-set journal costs?
