{"id":1239,"date":"2015-05-26T07:00:15","date_gmt":"2015-05-26T11:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/blogs\/asist\/?p=1239"},"modified":"2015-05-26T15:23:22","modified_gmt":"2015-05-26T19:23:22","slug":"spring-into-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/slis.simmons.edu\/blogs\/asist\/?p=1239","title":{"rendered":"Spring into Summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why not take advantage of some <strong>free<\/strong> time and get a head start on some upcoming classes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Free<\/em> being the important word here&#8230;.LIS Grad students love these sites.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Only after your morning bike ride and reading some chapters from your summer novel&#8230;there are free opportunities to learn some LIS skills.\u00a0 First, Simmons offers a free account to <a href=\"http:\/\/lynda.com\" target=\"_blank\">lynda.com<\/a> to their students using their own Simmons user name and password.\u00a0 You can review html, Google analytics, or Excel to name a few general ones plus more advanced tutorials.\u00a0 Second, check out Treehouse.com which my local library <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhl.org\/resources\/treehouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">(mhl.org)<\/a> offers as a free subscription.\u00a0 Your local library might too!\u00a0 They have individual courses or tracks to complete that focus on starting your own business, android development, or CSS.\u00a0 Personally, I like healthcare and medical subjects so if you are interested as well take some free courses offered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/nnlm.gov\/ntcc\/classes\/schedule.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>.\u00a0 They have online courses specifically geared towards librarians using PubMed.\u00a0 Finally, if you came to our ASIS&amp;T Year End Event you would have heard about Kanopy.\u00a0 This database is full of video based learning, documentaries, and independent films.\u00a0 Just log into your Simmons Library account, [Research&amp;Resources], [Databases], and <a href=\"http:\/\/simmons.libguides.com\/content.php?pid=248931&amp;sid=3075376\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">[K] for Kanopy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After your hard work learning on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/images\/search?q=couch&amp;qpvt=couch&amp;qpvt=couch&amp;FORM=IGRE\" target=\"_blank\">couch<\/a> don&#8217;t forget to relax.\u00a0 Keep your local library card handy because they might have free subscriptions for you to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopladigital.com\" target=\"_blank\">Hoopla<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freegalmusic.com\/users\/sdlogin\" target=\"_blank\">Freegal<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, take in some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mymodernmet.com\/profiles\/blogs\/21-mindblowing-hyperreal\" target=\"_blank\">art<\/a>, chase the <a href=\"http:\/\/dp.la\/search?q=ice+cream+truck&amp;type[]=image&amp;utf8=%E2%9C%93\" target=\"_blank\">ice cream truck<\/a>, and head to the <a href=\"http:\/\/rbsc.princeton.edu\/pathebaby\/node\/2466\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">beach<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why not take advantage of some free time and get a head start on some upcoming classes.
